Flynn Denied Knowing About Ferry Gas Leak Despite Being Emailed

Scotland's Transport Secretary Stephen Flynn told a Holyrood committee he had no knowledge of a gas leak aboard a CalMac ferry, despite records showing he had been emailed about the incident beforehand.

A faulty valve caused 700kg of methane gas to vent from the side of MV Glen Sannox in June 2025 while the vessel carried passengers between Arran and Troon. Flynn claimed he missed a BBC Scotland report on the incident because he was facetiming his children ahead of his committee appearance last month.

However, a briefing document obtained through a freedom of information request revealed Flynn was contacted twice about the story in the hours between its publication and his appearance before the committee.

Transport Scotland maintained that the document "made clear" Flynn had "not been briefed on the issue" prior to his testimony, though questions remain over the discrepancy between the emails and his public denial.
