Jack Smith Defends Trump Probes, Says He Won't Be 'Silenced'
Former Special Counsel Jack Smith pushed back against Republican senators during a tense Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Monday, defending his investigations into President Donald Trump and rejecting accusations that they were politically motivated.
Smith told lawmakers his probes strictly followed Justice Department policy and were built on evidence, not partisan intent, and declared he would not be "silenced" over his record as special counsel.
ommittee Chairman Chuck Grassley accused Smith's team of using broad subpoenas to target the Republican Party, pressing him on why his office obtained phone records and text messages linked to dozens of members of Congress without notifying them beforehand — part of the panel's ongoing "Arctic Frost" oversight review.
mith, who previously charged Trump over his handling of classified documents and efforts to overturn the 2020 election, maintained he acted within legal bounds throughout. Both cases against Trump were dropped after his 2024 election win. The exchange marks one of Smith's most direct public defenses
