Trump Threatens EU with Heavy Tariffs Over Canada Membership Plan

US President Donald Trump has threatened to take action against the EU if it moves forward with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's proposal to make Canada the bloc's first associate member, dismissing the idea as "laughable." Speaking to reporters en route to an event in North Carolina, he warned that if he views the move as hostile, he would impose "very serious tariffs or stop trading with Europe on many things." Von der Leyen unveiled the proposal during her State of the Union address, attended by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, as relations between Ottawa and Washington have soured since Trump's return to office. France's European Minister Benjamin Haddad pushed back, saying the US has no authority over the EU's geopolitical decisions. The Business StandardThe Business Standard

Canada already benefits from a free-trade deal with the EU that eliminates tariffs on roughly 99% of goods, and any new US tariffs would test the framework Washington and Brussels agreed last year. Brussels has yet to confirm whether it will proceed despite Trump's warning.
